Best Farmer’s Markets in the Midwest
Nothing beats a Midwest summer. The best way for families, foodies, and furry friends to enjoy the beautiful weather is to visit your local farmers market!
Once a week, communities come together to connect with their neighbors through the love of food, art, and soaking up the sun. Throughout my travels up and down the midwest, I have stumbled across many markets—each unique to their city’s personality and culture. Here are my favorites:
1. Tower Grove: St. Louis, Missouri
Surrounded by gigantic trees and paths of greenery, Tower Grove Park is the perfect setting for a farmers market. They even offer free yoga sessions for community members to revel in the serene setting. Yes, please!
2. Green City Market: Chicago, Illinois
The Green City Market highlights the beauty and vibrancy of Lincoln Park in the summer. Their mission is to provide nourishment to Chicago through accessible, locally-grown food!
3. Downtown Farmers’ Market: Des Moines, Iowa
I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning than strolling through Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers Market! Hundreds of vendors gather at the state’s capital to sell anything from organic produce to handmade pottery.
4. Hmongtown Marketplace: St. Paul, Minnesota
I have found that the best way to learn about cultures from around the world is to immerse myself in their art, music, and cuisine. The Hmongtown Marketplace highlights the authentic goods of St. Paul’s Hmong population, including quilts, clothing, and herbal products.
5. South Bend Farmers’ Market: South Bend, Indiana
Stationed alongside the St. Joseph River, this farmers market overflows with an abundance of colorful fruits and vegetables. My favorite part is eating at the Market Cafe—their menu offerings exclusively use the fresh meat, dairy, and produce sold by market vendors!
6. South Milwaukee Downtown Market: South Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Last, but certainly not least: The South Milwaukee Downtown Market! When you come to this market, you better come hungry! Between the savory flavors of barbeque and brats, and the sweet sensations of kettle corn and shaved ice, it’s almost impossible to decide what to try first. I usually just opt for a bite of everything!
On top of the market’s alluring vendors, exquisite artists, and a different live musician every week, the best part is spending time with all of my fellow South Milwaukeeans. When you’re surrounded by great neighbors in a great neighborhood, having a blast is inevitable.
The South Milwaukee Downtown Market takes place every Thursday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the Bucyrus Commons. Hope to see you there!
